EUCAM - European Centre for Monitoring Alcohol Marketing

Slovenia

Slovenia knows three regulations concerning alcohol marketing, two of which are statutory. Firstly there is the ‘Zakon o zdravstveni ustreznosti živil in izdelkov ter snovi, ki prihajajo v stik z živili’ (Law on Health and Hygiene Safety of Foods, and of Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Foods). This law is directed at all forms of marketing, except for sponsoring. It prohibits the advertising of alcoholic beverages, containing more than 15 % of alcohol by volume. It also forbids the advertising for alcohol on radio, television and cinema’s during the day time. Furthermore it contains extensive content regulations.

The second statutory regulation is the media law (‘Zakon o mediji’), which pertains to all forms of marketing and mainly cites back to the above mentioned law. The final regulation is one of the alcohol industry itself, this is the Slovenian Advertising Code (‘Slovenski oglaševalski kodeks’). This regulations also aims at all forms of marketing. It does so by content regulations which also pertain to tobacco marketing.

Monitoring of the alcohol marketing in Slovenia is done by two institutions, firstly the ‘Market Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia’ which does so to assure that advertisers abide the ‘Law on Health and Hygiene Safety of Foods, and of Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Foods’. Then there is also monitoring done by the Slovenian Advertising Chamber to check on the Slovenian Advertising Code.
